Here are five of our favourite heritage attractions - all within a short drive of our cottages. They’ll keep the kids and the young-at-heart entertained. Visit them to get an insight into the region’s history, stretching from the medieval period, through the Industrial Revolution to the 20th century.
Go 300 feet underground with a real miner, and see what life was like for the thousands of men who worked at the coal face. Above ground, there are informative exhibitions in historic colliery buildings. This free attraction is a must-see!
This volunteer-run attraction offers steam or diesel train rides through the Blaenavon World Heritage Site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Trains run on selected dates – check before travelling.
The town of Blaenavon was at the centre of the Industrial Revolution, producing iron and steel which was used to build bridges, railways and ships all across the globe. Visit the workers’ cottages and the ruined furnaces. Explore the story further with a visit to the nearby Blaenavon World Heritage Centre.
A magnificent 15th century castle with moat and towered gatehouse, set in splendid countryside. Climb the Great Tower for spectacular views. During the summer, Raglan Castle often hosts living history camps, re-enactments and falconry displays.
Just a few steps from Abergavenny’s shops, the grounds of the ruined castle are the perfect place for a picnic. There are grassed areas where children can let off steam, and great views towards the river Usk and the Blorenge mountain. The Victorian hunting lodge houses the town’s museum. Free entry.
